George Washington Cable, an American author and critic, was born in New Orleans and fought for the South in the Civil War. His first collection of tales of life in the south was Old creole days (1879). In 1884 he went on a reading tour with Mark Twain. He moved to Northampton, Mass., in 1885. Lafcadio Hearn (1850-1904) was a writer, translator, and teacher who wrote about New Orleans, the United States and is most well known for introducing the culture and literature of Japan to the West. Hearn spent ten years in New Orleans collecting songs for ethnomusicologist Henry Edward Krehbiel.
